The year 2010 brought a resurgence of international discussion about nuclear weapons issues. Both Russia and the United States released new statements outlining scenarios in which they would be willing to use their nuclear weapons. Russia and the United States also signed a New START agreement to replace the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.The 2010 Nuclear Security Summit, hosted by President Obama in Washington, DC, brought together the leaders of 47 nations to discuss ways to prevent nuclear terrorism and secure loose nuclear material.The 2010 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference was seen by many around the world as a key event in ensuring the continuation of the non-proliferation regime. The 2005 NPT Review Conference ended in failure, which further increased pressure for a positive outcome from the 2010 meeting.
